What is lyocell underwear?

Lyocell underwear is made from a cellulosic fibre regenerated from wood pulp using an organic solvent process. The fibre is smooth, highly absorbent and strong both wet and dry. In underwear it produces a fabric that feels cool and silky against the skin, wicks moisture efficiently and resists odour better than cotton or synthetic alternatives.

What is the difference between lyocell and modal?

Both are cellulosic fibres made from wood pulp, but they are produced differently. Modal is a modified viscose process and yields a fibre that is exceptionally soft with a lot of drape. Lyocell uses a closed-loop solvent process and yields a fibre that is stronger, more absorbent and cooler to the touch, with a smoother surface. In short: modal is the softer of the two, lyocell is the cooler and more moisture-managing.

Is lyocell the same as TENCEL?

Not quite. Lyocell is the generic fibre name. TENCEL is a registered brand name used by the Austrian producer Lenzing for its own lyocell and modal fibres. All TENCEL Lyocell is lyocell, but not all lyocell is TENCEL — the branded fibre carries specific sourcing and production certification.

Is lyocell underwear sustainable?

It is one of the better-performing fibres on this measure. Lyocell is made from wood pulp, a renewable feedstock, and the closed-loop production process recovers and reuses more than 99% of the solvent used, so very little is released as waste. It also uses substantially less water than conventional cotton. Sustainability still depends on the specific mill and its forestry sourcing.

Does lyocell underwear help with odour?

Yes. Lyocell's smooth fibre structure absorbs moisture into the fibre core rather than leaving it on the surface, which gives odour-causing bacteria far less to feed on. Independent testing has consistently shown lower bacterial growth on lyocell than on cotton or polyester, which is why it is a common choice for travel and long days.

Is lyocell or bamboo better for underwear?

Both are cellulosic and both outperform cotton. Bamboo viscose is marginally cooler to the touch and slightly more absorbent. Lyocell is stronger, holds its shape better over time, and is produced in a closed-loop process that makes it the more environmentally defensible of the two. If longevity and sustainability matter, lyocell; if you want the coolest possible handle, bamboo.

How do I wash lyocell underwear?

Cool wash at 30°C on a gentle cycle, line dry or tumble on low. Lyocell is strong when wet so it handles washing well, but high heat will shrink it and fabric softener will coat the fibre and blunt the moisture-wicking. No ironing needed — it drops out of the wash close to smooth.
