How to Care for Men's Underwear

How to Care for
Men's Underwear

Underwear rarely wears out. It gets washed out. Here is how to keep fit, colour and elastic where they should be — fabric by fabric.

Almost every pair of underwear that goes baggy, grey or slack was ruined in the machine rather than on the body. Elastane is the component that fails first, and the three things that kill it — heat, fabric softener and the tumble dryer — are the three things most people do without thinking.

Get those right and a good pair lasts years. The rest of this page is the detail.

The Six Rules

01
Wash cool

30–40°C on a gentle cycle. Hot water relaxes knitted structure, shrinks cotton and degrades elastane.

02
No fabric softener

It coats the fibre, breaks down elastic and reduces moisture-wicking. The single most common way good underwear is ruined.

03
Never tumble dry

Heat and tumbling together do more damage in one cycle than a month of wear. Air dry, always.

04
Use a wash bag

Especially for mesh, sheer and thin waistbands. It stops zips and hooks catching and stops straps stretching.

05
Dry flat, not hanging

A wet garment hung by the waistband will lengthen under its own weight. Lay flat or drape over a rail.

06
Skip the bleach

Bleach yellows white elastane over time. For whites, use an oxygen-based brightener instead.

Care by Fabric

The six rules cover everything. These are the fabric-specific extras worth knowing.

Fabric Wash What to watch for
Cotton 30–40°C, gentle Shrinks with heat. Slow to dry, so give it air rather than a radiator, which stiffens the fibre.
Ribbed cotton 30–40°C, gentle Heat relaxes the rib and you can see it. Never hang wet by the waistband. If it has gone slack, a cool wash and flat dry usually recovers most of it.
Modal & micro modal 30°C, gentle Very soft and slightly delicate when wet. A wash bag is worth it. Dries quickly, so no need for heat.
Lyocell / TENCEL™ 30°C, gentle Softener is especially bad here — it coats the smooth fibre surface and kills the wicking you paid for.
Bamboo 30°C, gentle Mild detergent only. Avoid heavy spin cycles, which crease the fibre.
Microfibre & nylon 30°C, gentle Wash inside out to protect printed and bonded detail. Dries fast — never needs a dryer.
Mesh & sheer 30°C, gentle, wash bag Snags easily. Keep away from Velcro, zips and anything with hooks.
Swimwear Cold rinse, then 30°C Rinse chlorine and salt out the same day. See our swimwear care guide.

How Often Should You Replace It?

There is no fixed rule, but there are honest signals. Replace a pair when the waistband no longer returns to shape after stretching, when the pouch has lost its structure, when colour has gone patchy, or when the fabric has thinned enough to see through in places it should not. Elastic failure is the usual cause, and it is not repairable.

Rotating a larger number of pairs makes each one last longer, because elastane recovers between wears. A pair worn once a fortnight will outlive a pair worn twice a week by more than the maths suggests.

Storage

Fold rather than roll tightly, and do not cram a drawer. Compression creases waistbands, and a permanently folded elastic band eventually cracks along the fold. Keep underwear out of direct sunlight, which fades dyes on cotton in particular.
