Choosing a fabric

What is the most breathable fabric for men's underwear?
The cellulosic fibres — modal, lyocell and bamboo viscose — outperform both cotton and polyester on breathability. Their filaments are finer and rounder than cotton, which creates more air space in the knit, and they absorb moisture into the fibre core then release it at the surface to evaporate. Cotton absorbs moisture but holds onto it, which is why a cotton pair feels damp long after a modal pair has dried.

Is cotton underwear breathable?
Cotton is breathable in the sense that air passes through it, but it manages moisture poorly. Cotton fibres absorb up to around 25% of their weight in water and hold it, so once you sweat the fabric stays wet against the skin. For a still day at a desk it is fine. For heat, travel or exertion, modal, lyocell and bamboo all perform better.

Which is more breathable, modal or bamboo?
They are close, and both beat cotton comfortably. Bamboo viscose has a slight edge on moisture absorption and is often marginally cooler to the touch — our bamboo trunks are from TEAMM8. Modal has the edge on softness, shape retention and colour fastness through repeated washing. Lyocell sits between the two with the best moisture management of the three. For most people the difference in feel matters more than the difference in measured breathability.

Comfort and everyday wear

What underwear is best for sweating?
Look for a moisture-wicking fabric and a cut that does not bunch. Modal, lyocell and bamboo all pull sweat away from the skin to evaporate, rather than holding it — lyocell is the strongest of the three on moisture management. A fitted brief or trunk with flatlock seams will also reduce the friction and chafing that heat and moisture make worse. Avoid heavy cotton, which stays wet, and untreated polyester, which does not absorb at all and holds odour.

Does breathable underwear help prevent chafing?
Indirectly, yes. Chafing is caused by friction, and friction increases sharply when skin and fabric are damp. A fabric that moves moisture away keeps the contact surface drier, which reduces the problem. The other half is construction — flatlock seams and a leg opening that sits flat against the thigh rather than gripping it.

Is breathable underwear worth it in a UK climate?
More than people expect. The UK issue is less about extreme heat and more about layering, heated offices and public transport, where cotton takes on moisture in the morning and never fully dries. A modal or lyocell pair handles that cycle far better, which is why the difference tends to be most noticeable on ordinary days rather than hot ones.
