Ask five men what the "best" underwear style is and you'll get five different answers — because there isn't one. Briefs, boxers and boxer briefs are built for different jobs. Here's how to tell which one is actually right for you.

Briefs — maximum support, minimum bulk

Briefs sit high on the hip with a close, supportive fit and no leg coverage beyond the seat. That close fit is the whole point: there's no fabric to shift, bunch or ride up, which makes briefs the standard choice for sport, training and anything active. They're also the most breathable option day-to-day since there's simply less fabric in contact with skin.

The trade-off is coverage — briefs show more leg and sit more visibly at the waistband under low-rise trousers, which is a style consideration as much as a functional one.

Best for: the gym, sport, hot weather, and anyone who prioritises support over coverage. Browse the full Men's Briefs range.

Boxers — coverage and a relaxed feel

Boxers (and their closer-fitting cousin, the trunk) trade some support for coverage and a more relaxed feel through the leg. Modern boxers — including most of what's sold under that name today — use stretch fabrics and contoured pouches specifically to avoid the old complaint about traditional boxers: riding up. A well-built boxer in a stretch fabric moves with the body rather than against it.

The trade-off is a slightly less supportive fit than a brief, and more fabric overall — which some men find warmer in summer.

Best for: everyday comfort, office wear, and anyone who prioritises coverage and a relaxed feel over maximum support. See the full range in our Men's Boxers Buying Guide.

Boxer briefs — the middle ground

A boxer brief combines the longer leg of a boxer with the closer, more supportive fit of a brief. It's the style most likely to work as a genuine all-rounder: enough coverage to sit comfortably under fitted trousers without a visible brief-style leg line, but enough structure and support to hold up during an active day.

The trade-off is that it's a compromise by design — not quite as supportive as a dedicated brief, not quite as relaxed as a dedicated boxer.

Best for: anyone who wants one style that works across most of the day, or who's unsure which end of the spectrum they prefer and wants to start in the middle.

So which should you buy?

If you already know you prioritise support over coverage, go brief. If you know you prioritise coverage and a relaxed feel, go boxer. If you're not sure, or you want one style that works for most situations, a boxer brief or fitted trunk is the safest starting point.

Fabric matters as much as cut — our Men's Underwear UK Sizing Guide covers how microfibre, cotton and Micro Modal each fit differently within the same labelled size. Ready to shop? Browse Briefs, Boxers, or the full Men's Underwear UK range.
