What Makes a Jockstrap a Jockstrap
A wide elastic band that sits at the natural waist — wider than most briefs, for stability under movement.
A supportive front pouch, often double-lined so it can hold a protective cup for contact sport.

Who Wears Jockstraps — and Why
The jockstrap was invented in 1874 as protective sports equipment for bicycle messengers riding cobbled Boston streets, and through the 20th century it became standard kit for footballers, boxers, martial artists, cricketers and anyone in a contact sport who needed protection from a direct hit. That's still true today: jockstraps are worn under sports uniforms and training kit specifically for support, and — fitted with a cup — for genuine protection.
At the same time, the jockstrap has a real and separate history in gay culture. From the 1950s, gay men — particularly within leather and fetish subcultures — adopted the jockstrap as a piece of style and eroticism, popularised by physique magazines and artists like Tom of Finland. By the 1970s it was a fixture of gay nightlife, and it remains closely associated with LGBTQ+ style, Pride collections and fetish scenes today.
Both of these histories are genuine, and neither cancels the other out. How to Wear and Care for a Jockstrap
Pull a jockstrap on like briefs and adjust the straps so the pouch sits snug without digging in — the exposed seat at the back is intentional design, not a fit issue, and nothing goes underneath it. For contact sport, insert a hard or soft cup into the pouch pocket if your style has one.
Wash after every wear, especially sports jockstraps — hand wash or use a delicate machine cycle in cool water, and air dry rather than tumble dry, since heat breaks down the elastic in the waistband and straps fastest. Regular washing and breathable fabric also help avoid jock itch (tinea cruris), a common fungal skin irritation linked to sweat, heat and tight-fitting gear rather than to jockstraps specifically.
